Suites and Fantasies: Works for violin and piano by Britten, Falla, Frolov, Milhaud and Schnittke

Particularly welcome here is the inclusion of Britten's Op 6 Suite, an early work of frequently arresting invention and here given a reading that fairly brims with gutsy temperament.

For her debut on disc Seoul-born British violinist, Joo Yeon Sir, has chosen a generous and wide-ranging programme, whose considerable emotional and stylistic challenges she surmounts with swaggering confidence and engaging flair. Enviably poised, silvery of tone and scrupulously attentive, she forms a real, breathing partnership with the admirable Irina Andrievsky. Particularly welcome here is the inclusion of Britten's Op 6 Suite, an early work of frequently arresting invention and here given a reading that fairly brims with gutsy temperament. Highlights elsewhere include a delectably sultry and winningly affectionate rendering of Falla's immensely personable Suite popular española, as well as a Milhaud Le boeuf sur le toit with high jinks, caprice and nostalgia in abundance. On the plentiful evidence served up here Joo Yeon Sir is truly a class act. Truthful sound and judicious balance bolster the appeal of this exceedingly impressive anthology.
